In general, Buddhist ceremony consists of many individual etiquettes. The word, "Buddhist ceremony" is the inclusive meaning of Buddhism theories and all kinds of training. and its narrow meaning refers to all kinds of ceremonies held in front of Buddha's statue by Buddhists who believe in Buddha's teachings and rely on them. All these ceremonies shows two types of characteristics, self guided and outsider guided, in contents. And their purposes are the salvation of living things and enlightenment by the means of penitence and prayers.


Types of Buddhist Ceremonies

1. Worship ceremony Morning and evening ceremonies to respect all objects of worship such as Buddhas, His teachings, monks and others on upper, middle and lower altars.

2. Vowing ceremony to comply Buddhist rules There are Buddhist rules which are one way of three Buddhist training methods (Buddhist rules, Buddhism theories and Buddha's wisdom) and all Buddhists have to keep them to enhence virtue and to expel evil.

3. Ceremony to guide the souls of the deceased to the heaven There are ceremonies for the deceased such as Sangjugwon-gongjae, Siwanggakbaejae (Daeryewanggongjae), Yeongsanjae, Suryukjae and for live ones such as Saengjeonyesujae.

4. Ceremony to sanctify the objects of worship with adding a stroke It is the ceremony to sanctify the newly produced objects of religious worship.

5. Ceremony of transfer It is a procedure to move the newly produced or existing objects of worship to another place for the ceremony.

6.Ceremony of offering It is a ceremony to show respects with offerings to the religious objects of worship.

7. Ceremony of training All kinds of training in daily life

8. Ceremony of Buddhist funeral and guiding service for the dead It is a ceremony to inform the souls of the dead of the way to heaven and the enlightenment.

Annual ceremonies Tong-al - A worship ceremony at New Year Day Gwanbul ceremonies - Yeondeunghoe[ceremony of lotus lanterns], Tapdoli[rounding of pagoda] at Buddha's birthday And other celebrating events on the days of Buddha's leaving (home life), His enlightenment and His death. Uranbunhoe - a ceremony to guide the souls of the dead to heaven

10. Sermonizing ceremonies Sermonizing ceremonies are held to encourage the contributions for establishment of temple or other agenda. They are Palgwanhoe, Yeondeunghoe [lotus lantern ceremony], Bangsaenghoe[ceremony of setting free of confined living creature], other kinds of memorial services, Jeomchalbeophoe [ceremony of sermonizing of Jeomchal Sutra], and other general sermonizing ceremonies.
